Happy new year -news from GCU Uganda

Dear friends of Global Children Uganda and Farming 4 Life,

We hope you have had a great start to the new year, and we are excited to share some updates about our collaboration with GCU and plans for the year ahead.

Partnership Visit in February 2024

In January, a team from Farming 4 Life Denmark will embark on a partnership visit to GCU. This will be a fantastic opportunity to strengthen our collaboration, exchange experiences, and set new goals for the future. Maria and Jens Silkjær, the founders of Farming 4 Life, will lead this trip, and we are eager to witness the progress of the projects up close. One of the goals of this visit is to establish an ambassador platform where all of you who support and follow our activities can become a special part of Farming 4 Life.

Workshops for Youth with Low Self-Esteem and Anxiety

A central element of the program for sustainable livelihoods and financial inclusion for youth is an approach focused on mindset change. This method has allowed GCU to create meaningful dialogue with young people by offering them a platform to share their stories and dreams. The youth are inspired and motivated through testimonies, counseling, and training.

Here, young people learn to embrace a new life with hope and courage to improve themselves and their communities. Many youths who previously struggled with anxiety and depression have, through this platform, regained hope and confidence to move forward in life.

Financial Literacy Helps Youth Plan for the Future

In addition to enterprise selection and training, financial literacy is a vital part of the program. GCU provides financial training to young people and their households, focusing on how to invest, save, and spend money responsibly.

Financial management among the youth has significantly improved. They have established their own savings groups at various centers, where they can save, lend money as investments, and borrow for personal projects. Many are looking forward to receiving their savings at the end of the year and starting small businesses based on the knowledge and skills they have gained during the training.

Farming God’s Way: A Cornerstone of the Farming 4 Life Approach

Agriculture is one of the main sources of income in Lira, and with a focus on the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal of “Zero Hunger,” Farming God’s Way is an environmentally friendly approach to farming that not only ensures high yields but also protects the soil from depletion of natural minerals.

GCU has trained all beneficiaries in how to protect the soil through techniques such as mulching, garden preparation, composting, harvest management, product processing, and connecting to agricultural markets.

Demonstration gardens have been set up in all five centers. For young people with physical disabilities who face challenges in farming, livestock rearing has been integrated as an income-generating activity. These youths have received goats, pigs, and chickens to start their own small farms.

Thank You for Your Support

We want to extend our heartfelt thanks to everyone who supports this work through prayers, donations, and engagement. Without you, this work would not be possible. We look forward to sharing more updates after the February visit and hope you will continue to follow our journey.

Best regards,

Farming 4 Life Denmark
